What is Staaash
Staaash is a self-hosted cloud drive and file management app. It is an alternative to cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox and self-hosted services like Nextcloud, ownCloud, Seafile and more.
Staaash supports resumable uploads, public links for sharing, media previews, multiple users for families and groups, storage quotas, trash and restore, syncing folders via the desktop app and more.
Why though?
The main reason I created Staaash is that I wanted full control over my own files. It was basically started off as a privacy concern of me – though it was supported by things like cloud services getting more expensive day by day.
I have a mini PC at home that I use to host my own stuff like Immich, Jellyfin, gaming servers, and stuff like that.
I noticed that I store all my stuff in my own hardware, from my images to videos, videos to movies, movies to even my websites – even this website is hosted on my machine via Coolify!
However, the ONLY thing that was missing was a file management app. You might now say that “okay but.. Aras, why didn’t you just use Nextcloud or something like that??” well, I think Nextcloud was kinda bloated for my use case. I just wanted a simple app that I can store my stuff, sometimes share with my friends & family and maybe even give them users in the app.
In addition to that, I never really had a project that was this big.
After a couple days of wondering what should I do, I just decided to create an app with the name Staaash. The idea was that I was going to use this app just for me and my friends. After a while passed, I thought why I don’t just make it public? Staaash’s first public commit was in Mar 30, 2026 – that day was the start of this loooong journey…
Anyway, I don’t wanna reveal all the sauce here because I will post a blog post of this later on. See you in that blog post, it should be linked down!
If it is not, I probably didn’t do it yet hehe :)
Small details
- I started building Staaash with AI. It was my first big project ever and it got me even more into coding, and made me realise that I really love and enjoy coding – which resulted in me starting to The Odin Project.
- Everything here is written by me! (Sorry for the bad writing, lol! Also, I like em-dashes. or whatever they’re called…)
